#138: Are Extraction Shooters Dying? 📉 PUBG Spin-off Canceled (+ Epic Free Game 🎁)

Krafton has abruptly halted development on 'PUBG: Black Budget', the upcoming extraction shooter based on the PUBG IP. 🎮 As a project expected to ride the 'Tarkov-like' wave and succeed the battle royale genre, the fact that even a veteran studio with a massive IP withdrew has sent shockwaves through the industry.

This decision extends beyond a mere project cancellation, highlighting structural limitations of the extraction genre and rapid shifts in consumer sentiment. 📉 High entry barriers and punishing loss penalties rallied only a niche hardcore audience, while causing unsustainable fatigue for the broader player base. It once again exposes the harsh reality that a live-service game lacking a mainstream user pool simply cannot survive.

The era of large-scale projects mimicking trends is waning. Now that the actual market share for extraction shooters has proven far narrower than anticipated, developers must recognize that projects blindly copying genre conventions without offering core fun that genuinely engages players are bound to fail. 💡

Admitting failure early and restructuring is a ruthless yet rational management decision. 🧭 Stripping away the fatigue hidden behind genre hype, where can the industry find the answers for new gameplay that truly resonates with gamers worldwide?
